Revitalized Nursery in Baqubah Provides Boost to Local Agriculture
The recently restored nursery in Baqubah has been formally opened, marking a major milestone in the agricultural growth of Diyala in eastern Iraq. Through a collaboration between the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Japanese government, more than 4,000 farmers in Diyala will benefit from the nursery’s modern irrigation methods and solar energy, producing over 25,000 seedlings annually.
The upgrades to the nursery, including cutting-edge irrigation systems, expanded greenhouse spaces, and a variety of seeds and agricultural supplies, have significantly increased its production capacity. Previously producing 10,000-15,000 seedlings per year, the nursery now produces 25,000 seedlings annually due to the intervention by the UNDP.
With a focus on growing a diverse range of plants and trees, such as ornamental, shade, and fruit-bearing trees like pomegranate and apple, the nursery plays a vital role in supporting the local community. The strengthened income stream from increased production will be reinvested to ensure the business’s long-term growth and sustainability.
Overall, the revitalized nursery in Baqubah is set to have a significant impact on the agriculture sector in Diyala, providing valuable resources and support to local farmers.
