Sri Lanka’s New President Promises Change
Sri Lanka’s leftist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has taken office as president, vowing to bring about change in a country that has been plagued by political corruption and economic crises. The 55-year-old opposition parliamentarian has promised to fight graft and strengthen the country’s fragile economy, which is currently facing its worst crisis in over seventy years.
In his inauguration speech, Dissanayake emphasized his commitment to upholding democracy and ensuring a clean political environment. He ran as the candidate for the National People’s Power (NPP) alliance and has received overwhelming support from the people of Sri Lanka, who are looking for a new political culture.
As Dissanayake begins his term, he faces the challenge of forming a new cabinet and navigating the country’s parliament, where his party holds only three out of 225 seats. One of his priorities will be to pass a budget required under a $2.9 billion IMF bailout deal.
Despite the challenges ahead, Dissanayake’s supporters are hopeful for a better future under his leadership.
