Shin Won-sik: Possibility of North Korea’s 7th nuclear test before and after US election

In a recent interview, Minister Suh Wonsik, the Director of National Security, expressed concerns about North Korea’s potential for a seventh nuclear test. He emphasized that the timing of such a test, including during the US presidential election, is a distinct possibility. Minister Suh highlighted that North Korea maintains the ability to conduct a nuclear test whenever its leader, Kim Jong-un, decides. He also mentioned that the US and South Korea are closely monitoring North Korea’s nuclear capabilities to assess the situation.

Minister Suh also addressed North Korea’s recent unveiling of a uranium enrichment facility, viewing it as a strategic move to attract attention during the US election season. He speculated that by raising nuclear threats, North Korea aims to gain leverage in future negotiations post-election. Additionally, Minister Suh commented on the potential for trilateral summits between South Korea, the US, and Japan, indicating a high likelihood of such meetings taking place by the end of the year.

Furthermore, Minister Suh discussed South Korea’s collaboration with the US in the nuclear energy sector, suggesting that despite disagreements on intellectual property rights, there are ample opportunities for cooperation. He expressed optimism that governmental efforts to foster positive relationships between Korean and American companies in the nuclear energy industry will lead to fruitful outcomes.
