The scorching heat and humidity levels in Assam have led to several students falling ill, prompting the state government to shut all schools in Kamrup Metro district, including the capital Guwahati, until September 27. Record-breaking temperatures of up to 39.6 degrees Celsius have been reported in various towns, causing disruptions in normal life. However, some relief came in the form of heavy rains in the region.
The situation is not limited to Assam, as other parts of the Northeast like Meghalaya have also been experiencing unusually high temperatures. This has affected tourism in popular locations like Shillong and Cherrapunjee, which are known for their cool climate.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision to close schools in Kamrup Metro to protect children from the extreme weather conditions. The state education department may reconsider the decision based on the weather forecast for the coming days. The rising temperatures in the region have broken previous records, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
