Schmidt’s Testimony in Kovacevic Case: By Choice or by Request?

Schmidt’s Testimony in Kovacevic Case: By Choice or by Request?

The High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Christian Schmidt, is set to testify in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) regarding the case of “Slaven Kovacevic.” After the ECHR ruled in Kovacevic’s favor, the BiH Council of Ministers appealed the decision, leading to Schmidt’s involvement and sparking controversy.

Kovacevic, a member of the “Others” group, sued BiH for violating his voting rights. The Council of Ministers argues that Kovacevic changed his national identification, challenging his claims. Kovacevic accused Schmidt of being biased and serving the interests of the HDZ, claiming Schmidt requested to testify voluntarily through a UK law firm.

Reacting to these allegations, Refik Lendo, Vice President of the Federation of BiH (FBiH), criticized Schmidt’s involvement in the case, stating it could harm BiH’s political system. Goran Bubic, lawyer for RS President Milorad Dodik, also weighed in, suggesting Schmidt’s testimony in the ECHR could impact Dodik’s defense in a separate case.
