Tanzanian Opposition Leaders Released on Bail
The leaders of Tanzania’s main opposition party, Freeman Mbowe and Tundu Lissu, were released on bail late Monday, the Party for Democracy and Progress, commonly known as Chadema, said on social media.
Mbowe and Lissu were arrested earlier on Monday ahead of a planned protest in Dar es Salaam. Both men were granted bail, but Mbowe chose to stay at the police station until all other members and supporters arrested during the protest are granted bail.
Chadema called for the protest after the abduction and death of party leader Ali Mohamed Kibao. The opposition party accuses security agents of being behind his murder, while President Samia Suluhu Hassan has ordered investigations into the incident.
Tanzanian Government Crackdown on Opposition
Lissu and Mbowe have faced multiple arrests in the past, with the most recent incident being on August 11 when police blocked a Youth Day rally organized by Chadema. The opposition party continues to face opposition from the government, with concerns raised by human rights activists and Western governments.
