Albania’s Prime Minister, Edi Rama, announced plans to transform the Tirana-based Bektashi Muslims into a sovereign state to promote moderation, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence during his speech at the United Nations. Emphasizing Albania’s history of saving Jewish refugees and sheltering Afghans, Rama highlighted the country’s commitment to humanitarian values.
The Bektashi Muslims, comprising approximately 10% of Albania’s Muslim population, will be granted sovereignty akin to the Vatican, operating independently in religious and administrative matters. Citizenship will be limited to top religious figures and state managers, with leadership overseen by Baba Mondi and a council.
Originating in the Ottoman Empire, the Bektashi Order gained prominence in the 15th century before relocating to Albania, where it played a role in politics. The move to establish the Bektashi Order as a sovereign state is seen as a historic step towards promoting global religious tolerance and spiritual leadership.
This development signifies Albania’s dedication to religious harmony and coexistence, showcasing a unique approach to fostering peaceful relations among various faiths.
