National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shamila Batohi has not sought an extension of her contract or term of office beyond the age stipulated in law, according to the National Prosecuting Authority. This comes in response to a report alleging efforts by Batohi to continue working beyond her retirement age.
Batohi and two of her three deputies are expected to retire soon. The NPA clarified that there have been no discussions with the justice minister or the president about extending her term. The article creating a false impression of a strained relationship between the NPA and the justice department was dismissed as factually incorrect.
The NPA and the justice department maintain a constructive working relationship, with regular meetings between Simelane and Batohi. The NPA cautions against misinformation campaigns at a time when the government is emphasizing the rule of law and supporting law enforcement agencies.
