Mexico’s Morena Party Elects Luisa Maria Alcalde as New Leader
The ruling Morena party in Mexico has elected Interior Secretary Luisa Maria Alcalde as its new leader, along with awarding a high-ranking position to the son of outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Alcalde, a 37-year-old lawyer from a prominent Mexican political family, will be responsible for uniting the different factions within Morena following the departure of Lopez Obrador, a pivotal figure in Mexican politics.
Founded in 2011 by Lopez Obrador, Morena has experienced a significant increase in popularity, gaining a strong foothold in Mexican politics. With governance in 23 states and majorities in both chambers of Congress, Morena has become a formidable force akin to the Institutional Revolutionary Party that dominated Mexico for decades.
Alcalde, a loyal ally of Lopez Obrador, has served in various political roles and assured Morena supporters of her dedication to the party. President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum expressed confidence in Morena’s new leadership, emphasizing the importance of unity and principles in guiding the party’s future.
Lopez Obrador’s son, Andres Manuel Lopez Beltran, also secured a key position within Morena as the new secretary of organization, further indicating a continuity of leadership within the party.
