Challenging the Extension of the Transitional Period: Constitutional Lawyers Take Action

A group of five constitutional lawyers in Juba has taken a bold step by filing a petition to the Supreme Court of South Sudan to challenge the recent extension of the transitional period of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement. The move comes after the Transitional Government postponed the December 2024 General Election to December 2026, citing unpreparedness.

The lawyers, including Deng John Deng, Kur Lual Kur, Warnyang Kiir Warnayng, Ador Abraham Kot, and Santo Daniel Deng, are questioning the legality of the extension and are calling for the court to declare it null and void. In a statement to reporters, Advocate Deng John Deng emphasized the unconstitutional nature of the extension and demanded that elections be conducted within the original timeframe.

The lawyers are resolute in their mission to uphold the constitution and have vowed to follow up on their petition. They are seeking a ruling from the court to overturn the extension and compel the government to adhere to the agreed-upon schedule for elections. Stay tuned for more updates as this legal battle unfolds.
