Japan protests Russia over Kremlin plane’s airspace violation

Japan’s defence minister announced a “very serious protest” against Moscow following a Russian patrol plane’s unauthorized entry into Japanese airspace three times. This incident, the first confirmed breach since 2019, led to Japan scrambling fighter jets and issuing warnings. The violation occurred over territorial waters near Rebun Island, Hokkaido, involving a Russian Il-38 patrol aircraft.

Expressing strong regret, Minoru Kihara stated, “We lodged a very serious protest with the Russian government and strongly urged them to prevent a recurrence.” Japan’s support for Ukraine has strained relations with Russia, with Tokyo backing Western actions against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between the two countries and underscores Japan’s commitment to defending its airspace and upholding international norms.
