Japan jets launch flares as Russian plane breaches airspace

Japan took swift action on Monday as Russian surveillance planes trespassed into Japanese airspace multiple times, prompting the deployment of Japanese fighter jets to respond. This incident marked the first use of flares by Tokyo in response to such airspace violations, signaling a strong stance against intrusions.

Defense Minister Minoru Kihara condemned the Russian IL-38 patrol aircraft’s actions near Hokkaido’s Rebun island and lodged a formal protest with the Russian government. This breach comes after a recent similar incident involving a Chinese military spy plane, raising concerns about Japan’s national security.

The use of flares by the Air Self-Defense Force was a precautionary measure to deter any potential threats posed by the Russian aircraft. While details of the encounters remain undisclosed, Kihara suggested a possible connection to joint military exercises between Russia and China in the region.

The tense airspace situation highlights ongoing geopolitical tensions and the need for vigilance in safeguarding Japan’s territorial integrity against unwarranted intrusions.
