Good news for the U.S.! Violent crime rates dropped in 2023, continuing a downward trend from the pandemic-induced spike. According to the FBI, overall violent crime decreased by 3% and murders by nearly 12% compared to the previous year.
Crime rates have taken center stage in the 2024 presidential race, with former President Donald Trump claiming a surge in crime under President Joe Biden’s leadership. However, despite the 2020 pandemic peak, violent crime remains significantly lower than in the 1990s.
The FBI’s report highlights the impact of the pandemic on crime rates. In 2020, homicides spiked by almost 30% — the highest one-year increase on record. However, by 2023, violent crime rates had nearly returned to pre-pandemic levels, showing a continuous decline.
Although property crime decreased overall, motor vehicle theft saw a significant increase in 2023. The FBI’s data, collected from over 16,000 agencies, shows a positive trend in most U.S. cities, with violent crimes at or below 2019 levels.
While different surveys present varying crime rate perspectives, the overall picture indicates a positive trend. As the U.S. navigates through challenging times, the gradual decline in violent crime is a beacon of hope for safer communities.
