The civil war in Sudan has forced more than 10 million people to flee their homes since April 2023, with two million seeking refuge outside the country, according to the UN’s refugee chief, Filippo Grandi. As the conflict persists, Sudanese refugees are moving further afield, including to Uganda and Europe.
Grandi expressed concern about the future of Sudan as the war continues to devastate the country. With the number of refugees worldwide on the rise, his leadership at the UNHCR becomes increasingly vital.
He highlighted the alarming trend of Sudanese refugees migrating to non-bordering countries like Uganda and Libya, with the potential for further movement towards Europe. The lack of adequate humanitarian aid for Sudan raises concerns about the crisis impacting the entire region.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan, between the army and paramilitary forces, has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties and severe food insecurity for millions. Despite the severity of the situation, Grandi lamented the lack of international attention on the crisis in Sudan, emphasizing the urgent need for support and intervention.
