Egypt Delivers Second Major Cache of Weapons to Somalia, Deepening Ties
An Egyptian warship recently delivered a significant amount of military aid to Somalia, including anti-aircraft guns and artillery, marking the second such delivery this year. This move is likely to intensify the growing bond between Egypt and Somalia, driven by their mutual unease towards Ethiopia.
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry stated that the shipment aims to enhance the capabilities of the Somali army, emphasizing Egypt’s commitment to supporting Somalia in achieving security, stability, and development. The delivery follows a joint security pact signed by the two countries in August, leading to multiple shipments of arms to Mogadishu.
The tension between Egypt and Ethiopia, particularly regarding the Nile River dam project, has fueled the collaboration between Egypt and Somalia. Meanwhile, Somalia’s opposition to Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland further strained the region’s dynamics. Egypt’s President reaffirmed Cairo’s support for Somalia, while also considering contributing troops to a peacekeeping mission in the country.
This latest military aid delivery not only reflects the evolving geopolitical alliances in the region but also highlights Egypt’s strategic interests in the Horn of Africa.
