A new report reveals that Australians on the lowest incomes are struggling to afford rent, with prices increasing by 47% across the country. The average rent for a unit has risen from $372 to $547 per week in Australia’s capital cities, putting low income earners at risk of housing stress.
Single households on JobSeeker are particularly affected, spending 110% of their income on rent. Those on the age pension or disability support pension are also at risk, spending 81% of their income on rent compared to the international benchmark of 30%.
The report highlights the lack of affordable housing options for low income earners, leading to homelessness, overcrowding, and lifelong renting. Despite recent government assistance, high rents and living costs continue to strain households.
To address the housing affordability crisis, advocates call for increased Centrelink payments, rent control measures, and the expansion of social housing. Without concrete action, the situation is only expected to worsen.
