Tragedy Strikes as 30 Decomposing Bodies Found on Boat off Senegal Coast
A heartbreaking discovery was made off the coast of Senegal, as at least 30 decomposing bodies were found on a drifting boat. The navy was alerted to the vessel, located 70km from Dakar, and brought it to shore, where recovery and identification operations are underway. The advanced state of decomposition has made the process extremely delicate.
This grim find sheds light on the recent increase in migrants departing from Senegal for Spain’s Canary Islands, a perilous journey across the Atlantic Ocean. Investigations are ongoing to determine when the boat departed, its origin, and the number of passengers onboard.
The surge in migrant-related deaths has prompted Senegal’s government to implement a 10-year plan to combat illegal migration. Despite the risks, factors like unemployment, conflict, and poverty continue to drive young men to attempt the treacherous journey. The Canary Islands route has become increasingly popular due to its single but dangerous journey, with a sharp increase reported by Frontex in 2023. The UN estimates around 40,000 migrants reached the Canary Islands last year, with nearly 1,000 known deaths and disappearances, hinting at a larger, unseen tragedy at sea.
