Despite the efforts of environmentalists, more than 63% of voters rejected the initiative aimed at increasing public funding to preserve wild spaces and green areas untouched by human development.
The vote, decided by both mail-in and in-person ballots, highlighted the challenges faced by Switzerland’s biodiversity due to factors like intensified agriculture, landscape fragmentation, and pollution. Proponents of the measure argued for the need to address these threats to safeguard the country’s rivers, lakes, valleys, and mountains.
However, the federal government, rural voters, and the main right-wing party opposed the plan, citing concerns about its cost and potential impact on economic development. Despite the outcome of the vote, the conversation about biodiversity conservation in Switzerland continues.
