Record high number of German refugees – RT World News

Germany is currently facing a refugee crisis, with the number of refugees, asylum seekers, and protected persons reaching a new high of 3.48 million by June 2024. This is an increase of roughly 60,000 from the previous year, with around one-third of the refugees coming from Ukraine.

The country is struggling to manage these numbers, with limited resources at both the state and federal levels. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has stated that resources are “almost exhausted” due to the influx of refugees and asylum seekers.

To address this crisis, Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government announced plans to bolster border controls for at least six months. Random checks are now in place at Germany’s borders with neighboring countries, expanding the existing system to cover the entire frontier.

Germany has become a key destination for Ukrainian refugees since the conflict with Russia began in 2022. The country currently hosts the largest number of Ukrainian refugees in the EU, followed by Poland and the Czech Republic.
