The Road to Peace: Bangsamoro Autonomous Region Prepares for Democratic Elections
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, southern Philippines, is gearing up for its first democratic elections since gaining autonomy. Scheduled for 2025, these elections will be a crucial test of the region’s peace process.
Huseyin Oruc, a Turkish representative in the Bangsamoro Third-Party Monitoring Team, emphasized the importance of both the normalization and political pillars of the peace process. While progress has been made on the political front, there have been delays in the normalization process, particularly concerning the integration of the region’s police force.
Oruc highlighted the need for a general amnesty to move towards lasting peace, but acknowledged the challenges in disarming and reintegrating former militants. Despite these obstacles, he remains optimistic about the potential for positive change through the upcoming elections.
As important figures from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front remain on the wanted list, Oruc emphasized the opportunity for these individuals to contribute to parliamentary representation if elected.
