The former Moroccan Prime Minister, Abdelilah Benkirane, has urged the current government to reconsider the country’s normalization deal with Israel. Benkirane, who leads the opposition Justice and Development Party, criticized the ties with Israel, citing the ongoing conflict in Gaza as a reason to rethink the agreement.
During a party meeting in Rabat, Benkirane expressed solidarity with Palestinians and called for a reassessment of the normalization agreements. He has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza and believes the agreements with Israel lack moral justification.
Benkirane also revealed that he advised his successor, Saadeddine Othmani, to resign after the normalization deal was signed in 2020. The decision to normalize relations sparked controversy within Morocco and the region, with various political factions and human rights organizations criticizing the move.
The normalization agreement, part of the Abraham Accords brokered by former US President Donald Trump, granted Morocco political and diplomatic benefits but drew criticism for deviating from the country’s traditional stance on the Palestinian issue.
