Mercedes-Benz India CEO Calls for Common Platform for EV Charging Stations
Mercedes-Benz India’s MD and CEO, Santosh Iyer, is advocating for a unified platform that provides real-time information on all available charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs). Iyer emphasized the need for a single app to enhance customer convenience and drive EV adoption in India. He suggested a UPI-based system to streamline the charging infrastructure, citing the fragmented nature of existing apps and payment gateways.
Currently, EV owners in India have to juggle multiple apps for charging services, unlike in other countries where integrated solutions are available. Iyer urged the government to prioritize convenience to incentivize EV ownership. He highlighted the government’s support for the EV sector through schemes like PM E-Drive.
Mercedes-Benz India has seen an increase in EV sales, with 5% of total sales attributed to electric vehicles this year. The company offers six battery electric vehicle models, including the EQS SUV 580 4MATIC and EQS sedan, manufactured in Pune.
By streamlining charging infrastructure and offering a unified payment platform, Mercedes-Benz aims to facilitate a smoother transition to electric vehicles in India.
