House Republicans are making strides towards passing a clean stopgap spending bill to extend government funding until mid-December, removing a controversial proof-of-citizenship voting measure supported by former President Donald Trump. The proposed continuing resolution maintains current spending levels until Dec. 20, allowing for more time to negotiate the federal budget for the 2025 fiscal year.
Initially, House Republicans failed to secure enough support for a funding proposal extending spending until March 2025, including the SAVE Act for voting integrity, prompting a shift in strategy. Despite objections from some party members, House Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing for a three-month CR without the SAVE Act.
While former President Trump has urged Republicans to reject any bill without the SAVE Act, GOP leaders emphasize the three-month CR as a victory in keeping spending consistent. The legislation allocates additional funding to boost the Secret Service’s budget for presidential candidate security.
