The International Chess Federation (Fide) has decided to uphold the ban on Russia’s chess team from international competitions due to the country’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. A majority of delegates voted in favor of maintaining sanctions, with only 21 countries supporting the lift of sanctions. This decision was seen as a test of Western resolve in pressuring Russia across various spheres.
The final decision now rests with Fide’s strategic body, the Fide Council, which is unlikely to overturn the vote. The head of the English Chess Federation called the outcome a “crushing defeat” for Russia, highlighting the repercussions if policies diverged from the International Olympic Committee’s recommendations.
The ban on the Russian national team, officials, flag, and anthem in international competitions will remain in place, while consultations will be conducted with the IOC regarding lifting restrictions on children and vulnerable groups. The move was commended by Ukraine and its allies, emphasizing the importance of keeping sanctions in place to hold the aggressor accountable.
