Former Chechen Republic Prime Minister, Muslim Khuchiev, has called for Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution to be removed from the standard school curriculum in Russia due to its conflict with religious education. Khuchiev, now an aide to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, criticized Darwin’s ideas as “false” and detrimental to children’s spiritual development.
Khuchiev proposed the exclusion of Darwin’s theory, stating that it contradicts religious teachings recognized by all religions. While acknowledging the option for students to study various theories, including evolution, he emphasized his opposition to presenting these ideas as absolute truths to children.
In response, Russian MP Anatoly Wasserman criticized Khuchiev’s proposal, highlighting the need to reconcile religious interpretations with scientific understanding. Wasserman defended Darwin’s pioneering work, noting that his errors were a result of the prevailing knowledge of his time.
Darwin’s theory of evolution, introduced in 1859, posits natural selection as the driving force behind biological evolution. While revolutionary, Darwin’s work has since been refined by later researchers like Gregor Mendel, who enhanced our understanding of genetic inheritance.
