Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has expressed strong disapproval of the outcome of the Edo State governorship election, labeling it as “shameful,” “rape,” and a threat to Nigeria’s democracy. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the September 21 poll.
Despite Okpebholo emerging victorious with 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), Fintiri, a PDP member, accused the election of irregularities such as vote-buying and disrupted collation processes.
Fintiri criticized APC’s national chairman for allegedly defying election day restrictions by flying into Edo on a private jet. He emphasized the importance of denouncing the “rape of democracy” and called for accountability, as the reported irregularities undermine trust in the democratic process.
In conclusion, Fintiri stated, “Nigeria deserves better, and we must condemn this attack on democracy.”
