Rawalpindi Battles Rising Dengue Cases
The garrison city of Rawalpindi is facing a surge in dengue cases, with an additional 57 patients diagnosed on Saturday, bringing the total for the season to 600. Patients are being treated at government-run hospitals, including Holy Family Hospital, Benazir Bhutto Hospital, and District Headquarters Hospital.
According to the District Health Authority, there have been 2,826 FIRs and 2,226 challans issued for violations of dengue SOPs in 2024, resulting in fines of Rs10.44 million. Special Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Tayyab Farid, urged the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) to actively participate in the anti-dengue campaign to eliminate standing water where mosquitos breed.
Wasa Managing Director, Saleem Ashraf, reported that 523 dengue hotspots are being monitored daily by special teams. These teams are working to address complaints and clean water facilities to prevent the spread of dengue. Measures include cleaning tubewells, filtration plants, and displaying awareness messages on Wasa water tankers.
Efforts are being made to coordinate dengue prevention activities with the district administration to ensure a comprehensive response to the outbreak.
