1 dead, 10 missing after record rains in Ishikawa quake zone

Deadly floods and mudslides wreak havoc in parts of Ishikawa Prefecture, leaving one person confirmed dead and 10 missing. The cities of Wajima and Suzu, still recovering from an earlier earthquake, are hit hard by the deluge, with buildings and roads submerged. The Meteorological Agency warns of further flooding and landslides as the torrential rains continue.

Despite a downgrade from a Level 5 emergency warning to a regular alert, authorities urge vigilance due to the ongoing threat. Wajima reports record rainfall, prompting the evacuation of 45,000 residents. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi describes the situation as “unprecedented,” with rivers overflowing and buildings flooded.

The Self-Defense Forces join rescue efforts as the storm, Tropical Storm Pulasan, poses additional risks. Social media images show roads submerged and houses collapsed. With the memory of a devastating earthquake still fresh, the region faces yet another natural disaster, emphasizing the resilience of its residents.
