Zelensky plans to remove top defense officials – RT Russia & former Soviet Union

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is reportedly set to dismiss Defense Minister Rustem Umerov and military intelligence chief Kirill Budanov, according to the Strana news site. This move follows a recent purge of half of the country’s ministers by Zelensky.

Sources suggest that both Umerov and Budanov have fallen out of favor with Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andrey Yermak. Budanov, in particular, is seen as a rival to Yermak within Zelensky’s inner circle. Umerov, on the other hand, has reportedly lost support from pro-Western media and activists in Kiev.

Zelensky has a history of replacing senior military and political figures in response to setbacks in the conflict with Russia. The recent wave of firings, including seven cabinet ministers, is viewed by some as Yermak’s attempt to consolidate power. Despite criticism, Zelensky defends the reshuffle as necessary for strengthening state institutions.

The ongoing turmoil within Zelensky’s government is seen as a sign of dysfunction in the West. However, Zelensky maintains that the cabinet reshuffle is essential for revitalizing the administration.
