CNN — Ukraine faces the risk of severe electricity disruptions this winter, as highlighted by the International Energy Agency (IEA) urging for assistance to bolster the country’s energy security. Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, repeated attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have left the nation vulnerable as colder weather approaches.
The IEA’s executive director, Fatih Birol, acknowledged Ukraine’s resilience in past winters but emphasized that the upcoming season will pose its toughest challenge yet. With Russia’s recent aerial attacks causing power outages and widespread destruction, nearly two-thirds of Ukraine’s power generation capacity remains compromised.
The IEA estimates a potential 6-gigawatt electricity shortfall in Ukraine this winter, equivalent to the peak annual demand of Denmark. To address these risks, the agency proposes measures including enhanced security for energy infrastructure, increased efficiency, and support for importing electricity and natural gas from the EU.
The EU has pledged €160 million in aid to help Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of holding Russia accountable for the damage caused. Efforts are underway to repair infrastructure and strengthen energy connections with Europe to mitigate potential disruptions.
