**Mysterious River Pollution Leads to Mass Fish Deaths in Ukraine**
In June, dead fish were spotted in the Seym River, raising concerns as the river flows from Russia into Ukraine. By August, reports emerged of fish dying en masse in Ukrainian regions near the river. The situation escalated when polluted water reached the Chernihiv region, causing panic on social media.
Experts attributed the fish deaths to organic pollution, likely from a Russian sugar factory near the border. The contamination triggered a chain reaction, depleting oxygen levels in the water and causing mass suffocation among aquatic life. Efforts to restore oxygen levels with aeration stations saved some fish populations.
Despite the severity of the pollution, water supply in Kyiv remained unaffected. Government authorities worked to identify the source of contamination, pointing to the sugar factory in Tetkino, Russia. Satellite images and water composition analysis supported this claim, indicating significant amounts of contaminated water entering the Seym River.
Environmentalists remain hopeful for the recovery of the Seym and Desna rivers’ ecosystems, emphasizing the need for stricter safety regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
