Romania aims to enhance cooperation with SOCAR on new projects – minister

Romania’s Energy Minister, Sebastian-Ioan Burduja, expressed enthusiasm for expanding cooperation with Azerbaijan’s SOCAR during an exclusive interview with Trend. The Memorandum of Understanding signed in Sofia outlines collaboration between SOCAR and distribution system operators for additional gas supply from Azerbaijan to Europe.

Burduja highlighted a project involving an LNG terminal in the Black Sea, which will establish a new gas transport corridor from the Caspian region, particularly from Azerbaijan, providing a direct route for imported gas into the EU market. This initiative aims to enhance energy security in Central and Southeastern European states.

Emphasizing Romania’s pro-business environment, Burduja welcomed investors, citing the country’s economic growth and investor-friendly regulations. He stressed the importance of diversifying gas import entry points and sources to ensure secure and reliable energy supplies.

With Romania being a significant FDI recipient in the CEE region, Burduja expressed confidence in the potential positive impact of the LNG project and sought support from the European Commission for its implementation.
