The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (NCSSR) expressed concern over the widespread instances of vote buying during the Edo State governorship election. Despite the presence of security personnel, there were reports of voters being offered money and food items in exchange for their votes at various polling units. The election also faced challenges due to pre-election tension and the spread of fake news, leading to heightened anxiety among voters.
Yunusa Z. Ya’u, the convener of NCSSR, highlighted the price of votes ranging from ₦5,000 to ₦10,000 per voter in different locations. He also mentioned the impact of fake news on the election process, with misinformation creating confusion and tension among voters. Despite these challenges, the civil society group commended the peaceful conduct of voters and called on all stakeholders to ensure the integrity of the election process.
As the situation unfolds, NCSSR will continue to monitor and provide a comprehensive report on the election. Stakeholders such as INEC, security agencies, and political parties are urged to uphold transparency and avoid actions that could undermine the credibility of the election.
