Morocco Approves New Earthquake-Resistant Construction Regulations
After the devastating earthquake in September 2023, Morocco’s Government Council has now approved draft Decree 2.24.766 to introduce amendments to the Earthquake-Resistant Construction Regulations. This decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to rebuild and enhance earthquake resilience across the country, especially in regions most affected by the disaster.
The new regulations, presented by Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, Minister of National Land Planning, focus on revising safety standards to ensure buildings can withstand earthquakes. These updates are based on the latest scientific research to better equip construction practices with the knowledge of earthquake risks.
Minister Delegate Mustapha Baitas emphasized the importance of these changes during a press briefing, stating that they will support Morocco’s recovery and protect future infrastructure. The decree also empowers the National Earthquake Engineering Committee to enforce the new requirements, ultimately aiming to safeguard populations and promote the development of earthquake-resistant structures in vulnerable areas.
