Melbourne women murders: Man arrested in Italy after almost 50 years

An arrest has been made in Italy in connection to the 1977 murders of two women in Melbourne, Australia. Suzanne Armstrong and Susan Bartlett were found dead in their home on Easey Street, Collingwood, sparking a high-profile cold case that remained unsolved for decades. The 65-year-old suspect, a Greek-Australian dual citizen, was apprehended at a Rome airport and Victoria police are seeking extradition.

The women, aged 27 and 28 respectively, were stabbed multiple times while Armstrong’s 16-month-old toddler slept in another room. The case, known as the Easey Street murders, had a $1 million reward for new information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Chief Commissioner Shane Patton called the arrest a significant breakthrough, acknowledging the tireless work of detectives over the years. He highlighted the impact of the crime on the community and praised the resilience of the victims’ families. The investigation continues as justice may finally be served after more than four decades.
