The Battle Between Church and State: A New Documentary by Emir Kusturica

The iconic Serbian filmmaker, Emir Kusturica, recently premiered his latest documentary film, ‘People of Christ. Our Time,’ in Belgrade. The film delves into the persecution faced by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in Kiev, amidst a split between the traditional UOC and the Kiev-supported Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU).

Featuring personal stories of priests and faithful followers enduring persecution, the documentary sheds light on the struggles faced by Orthodox Christians globally. Kusturica emphasizes the importance of countering attempts to suppress religious freedom and undermine faith.

At a press conference following the premiere, Kusturica expressed his desire for the film to reach audiences worldwide, including in Ukraine. He criticized Western attempts to diminish religious beliefs, particularly in Ukraine, where Orthodoxy remains under threat.

Despite challenges, Kusturica remains hopeful, highlighting the resilience of faith in countries like Russia and Serbia. The documentary is set to be translated into multiple languages for international viewers, serving as a powerful voice against oppression and advocating for religious rights.
