Heavy rainfall in central Japan has led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people in the Noto peninsula, exacerbating the difficulties faced after a recent earthquake. At least 12 rivers overflowed, causing flooding and sweeping away individuals in Ishikawa prefecture. Wajima city received a record-breaking 318.5mm of rainfall, prompting mass evacuations of around 45,000 residents. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the highest level of heavy rainfall alerts, as neighbouring cities also experienced extreme rainfall and flooding.
The deluge has also triggered landslides in an area still recovering from a devastating earthquake earlier in the year. The government has deployed military personnel to assist with search and rescue efforts, emphasizing the paramount importance of safeguarding lives. The chief cabinet secretary urged residents to stay informed about weather updates and evacuation recommendations, acknowledging the heightened sense of uncertainty in the region.
Despite the challenges posed by natural disasters, the resilience of the affected communities shines through as they come together to navigate this latest crisis.
