The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief praised China for its constructive approach in the recent agreement with Japan regarding the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station into the ocean. China played a decisive role in achieving this positive development, as stated by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
Japan unilaterally started the discharge of contaminated water in August 2023, prompting strong opposition from China, a key stakeholder. Following multiple consultations, an agreement was reached including Japan’s commitment to establishing a long-term international monitoring arrangement within the IAEA framework.
Grossi emphasized the importance of transparency in the process and lauded China’s progress in nuclear energy development. The IAEA will act as a bridge between China and Japan in implementing the agreement and ensuring all measures are properly executed.
This collaboration marks the 40th anniversary of China’s accession to the IAEA, showcasing the deep cooperation between the two entities. Grossi looks forward to even closer ties in the future.
