Event in U.S. Congress to honor Nagorno-Karabakh anniversary, demand Armenian right of return

The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) recently held the “Accountability | 2024” event on Capitol Hill, marking one year since Azerbaijan’s military offensive and ethnic cleansing of Nagorno-Karabakh. Over 120,000 indigenous Armenians were forcibly displaced from their historic homeland during this time. ANCA’s Grassroots Director, Gev Iskajyan, emphasized the need for justice and the right of return for displaced Armenians. Members of Congress called for actions like enforcing prohibitions on U.S. military assistance to Azerbaijan and imposing sanctions on Azerbaijani officials responsible for war crimes.

Representatives like Grace Meng, Judy Chu, Gabe Amo, Brad Sherman, and Frank Pallone reiterated the importance of supporting Armenians and holding Azerbaijan accountable. Former Human Rights Defender of Nagorno Karabakh, Gegham Stepanyan, highlighted the ongoing fight for the return of the Armenian people and the preservation of their culture. The event also showcased powerful images by photojournalist Davit Ghahramanyan, depicting the impact of Azerbaijan’s aggression.

The event ended with a prayer from Fr. Hovhannes Hovhannisyan, emphasizing the need for global recognition and prevention of future genocides. The event was a powerful call to action for justice and support for the Armenian community.
