Edo Guber Showdown: Focus on INEC and Police

17 Factors That May Jeopardize Today’s Election

By Clifford Ndujihe, Politics Editor

As the Edo State 2024 governorship election unfolds today, concerns are rising over potential factors that could undermine the credibility and peaceful conduct of the polls. With allegations of Federal Might, police interference, and voter inducement swirling around, all eyes are on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure a fair and transparent election process.

The ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) of using unfair tactics to secure victory. On the other hand, the APC is demanding justice for the killing of a police officer attached to their candidate. Amidst this backdrop, election monitoring groups like Yiaga Africa are wary of violence erupting in certain LGAs due to economic hardship and security volatility.

Given the history of electoral malpractices in Nigeria, particularly during the 2019 polls, concerns persist around the role of INEC and security forces in ensuring a smooth election process. From logistical challenges to deliberate disruptions and intimidation tactics, the specter of electoral violence looms large over today’s election.

With high stakes and heightened tensions, the hope is that INEC and security agencies will uphold their mandate to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and prevent any attempts to subvert the will of the people.
