Brazil: Bruno and Dom case defendant granted house arrest
Fisherman Oseney da Costa de Oliveira, involved in the 2022 murder of British journalist Dom Phillips and activist Bruno Pereira, has been granted house arrest. The decision was made by Justice Marcos Augusto de Sousa of Brasilia’s Federal First Region Regional Court (TRF1), following a request by the suspect’s legal team citing health issues. Da Costa de Oliveira will be monitored with a tracking anklet while staying with a relative in Manaus.
The court rejected accusations against him due to lack of evidence placing him at the crime scene. Meanwhile, his son Amarildo and another suspect will remain in prison. Bruno and Dom were killed in the Amazon while traveling through the Vale do Javari Indigenous Land. Phillips, an environmental journalist, and Pereira, an indigenous rights activist, were dedicated to protecting indigenous communities and environmental preservation.
