Violence Erupts in Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts
The Bangladeshi military reported a deadly incident in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region where troops opened fire on a tribal group following ethnic violence. The conflict, triggered by the lynching of a man accused of theft, resulted in four casualties as shops and establishments were attacked and set on fire in retaliation.
The United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) rebel group was identified as the instigators of the violence, leading to a confrontation with military forces. Despite efforts to control the situation, the violence spread to neighboring districts, claiming more lives.
Interim leader Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow over the escalating attacks and promised a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. The region’s history of conflict over tribal autonomy and land rights continues to fuel unrest despite past peace agreements.
The latest incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing tensions in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region, underscoring the need for sustainable peace and resolution of long-standing grievances.
