President Asif Ali Zardari has signed off on the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Amendment Ordinance 2024, amending the law to limit the top judge’s powers of bench formation, according to Radio Pakistan. The law passed in April 2023 states that a three-member bench, including the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) and two senior judges, will decide on taking up matters suo motu.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar emphasized that these changes aim to enhance transparency and serve public interest. The amendments also grant the right to appeal within 30 days of judgment in suo motu cases. Additionally, a committee under the CJP will oversee bench formation, ensuring timely hearings.
Reforms address delays in cases and increase public access to judicial processes. The changes were made to prioritize the public interest, with a focus on transparency and efficiency in the judicial system.
