The United States Ambassador to Tanzania, Michael Battle, affirmed the US commitment to democratic principles despite criticism from President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The President had reprimanded Western diplomats, including the US Embassy, for intervening in Tanzania’s internal affairs regarding recent abductions and killings.
However, Ambassador Battle emphasized the importance of democracy and human rights, stating that US support for Tanzania, totaling $7.5 billion over the years, is contingent upon respect for these principles. He acknowledged that both countries face imperfections in maintaining democratic standards.
The US Embassy was the first to condemn the abduction and murder of opposition Chadema party official Ali Mohamed Kibao, with other missions following suit. President Samia urged foreign envoys to refrain from interference, asserting Tanzania’s sovereignty in investigating the incidents.
The escalating political violence in Tanzania has raised concerns ahead of the upcoming local government elections on November 28, seen as a precursor to the 2022 general election. Despite differences, the dialogue on democracy continues, with stakeholders working towards ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process.
