The European Commission is currently considering a bid by Turkey to regulate the beloved döner kebab street food market in Germany. With an annual sales volume of over 2.3 billion euros in Germany and 3.5 billion euros across Europe, the döner kebab industry holds a significant economic presence.
The potential regulations could impact the meat quality, marination ingredients, and slicing thickness of döner kebabs, changing the traditional preparation methods cherished by many. The European Commission must decide by September 24, following objections from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, which aims to preserve the diverse preparation styles of the dish.
Despite concerns about the proposed regulations, some restaurant owners, like Deniz Buchholz of Kebap With Attitude, remain optimistic. Buchholz suggests that they may find creative solutions, such as renaming variations of the döner kebab to comply with potential guidelines.
