Turkey has officially joined the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP) forum, collaborating with the US, the EU, and other countries to enhance the production of critical raw materials and rare earth elements. A US State Department spokesperson confirmed Turkey’s membership in the forum, aiming to make a formal announcement soon.
Rare earth elements are essential for manufacturing high-tech devices like smartphones, computers, and electric car batteries. The MSP forum, established in 2024, seeks to diversify the global supply chain of rare earth minerals and critical minerals to reduce Chinese dominance in the sector. Turkey’s recent discovery of a significant rare earth reserve in Eskisehir has gained global interest.
Turkey plans to produce various rare earth elements and minerals annually and is expected to become a full member of the MSP in the future. The forum also presents Ankara with opportunities to collaborate on projects to accelerate production and develop necessary infrastructure.
While Turkey remains in negotiations with China for mining rare earth elements, the EU has initiated projects to support Turkey’s rare earth mineral ecosystem. European countries and Turkey are exploring potential partnerships to ensure local processing and value addition of these minerals within Turkey.
