Rethinking the Future of South Sudan: An Analysis

By Dr. Ayine Nigo (PhD/FHEA)

If only 30 percent of the proposed objectives of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) were achieved, it could lead to vital reforms for stability, peace, and democratic governance in the region. However, concerns about extensions, postponements of elections, and the implications for the country’s future are growing.

The absence of response from the opposition regarding the extension raises worries about the limitations on rights and ongoing issues like corruption, displacement, and insecurity in various forms. The extensions may indicate a delay tactic for the government rather than genuine progress towards peace and stability.

The postponement of elections outlined in the R-ARCSS raises legal and political issues, leading to public discontent and potential conflict resurgence. The need for independent institutions and transparent election processes remains unmet, casting doubts on the government’s commitment to democratic principles.

In deciding the future course, South Sudan must weigh the impact of extensions on regional stability, particularly with neighboring countries like Kenya. The choices made now will shape the country’s character and capabilities, serving as a defining moment for the peace process.
