“It’s not war, it’s a genocide. A genocide that is only possible due to the necessary complicity of the United States and Europe.”
Irene Montero, a Spanish Member of the EU Parliament, has accused the Commission of supporting genocide in Gaza, stressing the complicity of the United States and Europe in the ongoing atrocities.
Montero condemned the destruction in Gaza, stating, “When a criminal state murders more than 41,000 people, destroys homes, schools, and roads, displaces the population, and blocks essential resources, it is not a war; it’s genocide.”
The Spanish parliamentarian also criticized the forced removal of a Palestinian member’s keffiyah as a demonstration of political and moral decay. Montero raised questions about the lack of an arms embargo on Israel and the need for accountability for the genocide.
In July, Montero called on Spain to suspend diplomatic relations with Israel following the assassination of a Hezbollah leader in Beirut, emphasizing the need to end the double standards towards Gaza.
Spanish officials, including Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, have consistently advocated for a ceasefire and a unified stance against Israel’s actions in Gaza. Spain’s recognition of Palestine and support for legal action against Israel at the ICJ demonstrate a commitment to justice in the region.
