In a recent analysis by the BBC, it was revealed that Russian volunteers, who initially joined the military after the start of the war, now make up the largest portion of casualties in Ukraine. With over 70,000 Russian soldiers identified as killed in action, the actual number is believed to be much higher.
Volunteers aged 42 to 50, and even as old as 71, have been among the casualties, including 250 volunteers over the age of 60. Many volunteers come from small towns in regions of Russia with limited job opportunities, lured by higher military salaries and benefits.
The increase in volunteer casualties is attributed to their deployment in the most challenging combat zones, particularly in Donetsk. Some volunteers reported coercion or threats in Chechnya, while others were unaware of the open-ended nature of their contracts. Despite complaints about unpaid wages, social media posts show the attractiveness of military service due to higher pay and benefits.
Initiatives like one-time bonuses and monthly payments are being introduced to incentivize more Russians to join the military. As the conflict continues, the sacrifice and impact of Russian volunteers in Ukraine remain significant.
