Centuries ago, during the Han Dynasty, women like Cai Wenji and Feng Jieyu showcased resilience and courage, their stories immortalized in art. The Palace Museum in Beijing is now celebrating these timeless beauties in an exhibition featuring 83 pieces honoring the spirit and beauty of Chinese women. These paintings, known as “court lady paintings,” have evolved over the centuries, reflecting changes in society and cultural trends.
From delicate images preferred during the Six Dynasties period to the graceful depictions of the Tang Dynasty, each painting captures the essence of its era. Gu Kaizhi’s milestone work, “Admonitions of the Instructress to Court Ladies,” celebrates honorable women in history, while paintings from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties each have unique characteristics.
The exhibition not only highlights female celebrities but also ordinary women, showcasing their daily lives through multimedia displays and creative installations. The curators hope to inspire visitors to appreciate the women depicted in these paintings and recognize the diverse roles and contributions of women throughout history.
